How Are Aluminium Heat Sinks Better Than Their Alternatives?
Heat sinks used to dissipate the heat from electronic devices such as computers, playing consoles, and others. Every electronic device will have at least one heat sink installed somewhere to deal with the overheating issues. Heat sinks keep the devices cool and enable them to perform their functions smoother.
In this article, we’ll talk about different types of aluminium heat sinks and their usages. Let’s get started, shall we?
There are two categories in which heat sinks are divided: Active heat sinks and Passive heat sinks. An active aluminium heat sink will have a small fan attached to it. This fan will blow cool air from the sink and keep the device cool. Since it has a moving piece attached to it, it is a bit expensive than the other one. A passive aluminium heat sink doesn’t have any other component attached to it. It works on the conventional principle of heat dissipation. It is a bit cheaper than the active heat sink.
Aluminum heat sinks are widely used because aluminum is a lightweight metal. Its capacity for thermal conduction falls under the usability zone of most of the electronic and electrical equipment. There are copper heat sinks as well, but they are not as widely used as the aluminium ones.
Different types of aluminium heat sinks:
Extruded aluminium heat sinks: The most widely used type of heat sink in work is extruded aluminium heat sinks. They cost lesser than the other types of heat sinks are very much reliable. Aluminium heat sink manufacturers can even provide custom-built extruded aluminium heat sinks as per your device’s demands.
Bonded aluminium heat sinks: Bonded heat sinks are used for bigger machines and are usually heavy sized heat sinks. The base and the fin materials can be of the same as different materials. If thermal conductivity is of medium-range requirement, alumiunium bonded heat sinks provide a great value for money. Because they are made from aluminum, they fall under low weighted heat sinks despite their size.
Stamped Aluminium heat sinks: Aluminium heat sink manufacturers provide stamped heat sinks as an alternative to extruded heat sinks if the budget is lower. The fins are stamped in these heat sinks. After stamping the fins, they are attached to the base material. These heat sinks are typically used in applications that are of low power. You can’t use them in high power devices because they won’t be able to dissipate a huge amount of heat that gets generated in bigger machines.
Why aluminium heat sink is a better choice?
Aluminium heat sinks provide highly efficient heat dissipation at a lower cost. On top of that, the entire set-up weighs much lesser than the other metallic heat sinks like copper heat sinks.
Make sure that you choose the right kind of heat sink for your devices. A heat sink possesses a very crucial role in any electronic and electrical device’s life span. If it doesn’t work as it is supposed to be, it puts the life span of the device at risk.
